Chocolate Chip Cookies Written By: Shantel Whitford Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 8 minutes Print Recipe Ingredients 1 cup salted butter softened 1 cup white (granulated) sugar 1 cup brown sugar packed 2 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 large eggs 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 2 cups chocolate chips Instructions Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a bowl mix flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder. Set aside. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and sugars until combined. Beat in eggs and vanilla until fluffy. Mix in the dry ingredients until combined. Drop cookie batter using a tablespoon onto a baking sheet, leaving some space between them. Bake cookies for 8 minutes. Allow them to cool for 1 minute on the baking sheet; then move the cookies to a cooling rack to continue cooling. With older children, ask them to double this batch for a quick and fun math lesson. Our kids love to bake, and they love chocolate chip cookies. We often swap out the chocolate chips for peanut butter chips, or my favorite, butterscotch chips. I began baking as a child and learned fractions with my grandmother before I learned them in school. I remember one time I used ½ cup of vanilla instead of a ½ teaspoon, and needless to say, my cookies were not awesome and my mom was not impressed. We tried to multiply the batch to help not waste the ingredients. As delicious as vanilla smells, a little goes a long way! My mom was always very patient with my kitchen failures when I was young, and my parents allowed me to have freedom in the kitchen. It was my space. I also always had to clean up my mess, of course, and do the dishes. My parents had it made, they just had to grocery shop! Our kids spend lots of time in the kitchen, and it’s a great family activity if your kitchen is big enough! If you have a child that shows interest, it is such a rewarding skill to let them learn.
